First, just for the record, I can’t stand the so-called “birther” movement. Haven’t these people seen President Obama’s birth certificate yet??? (that’s a download link, FYI)
OK, now that that is out of the way, I do have a question:
Today, Politico is running with speculation that Senator Ted Cruz—when not airing out private Republican Party conversations to the public—is mulling a run for the United States Presidency.
But hold on a second, Sen. Ted Cruz was definitely born in Canada. Certainly there are tons of exceptions. Sen. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone (naval base), and Gov. George Romney, Gov. Mitt Romney’s father, was born in Mexico (both parents were US citizens at the time).
The Constitution says that the President must be a natural-born citizen, and I guess that is where the discussion begins. Even the Congressional Research Service does not unequivocally answer the Cruz quandary:
“The weight of scholarly legal and historical opinion appears to support the notion that 'natural born Citizen' means….” Don’t take my word for it…here’s a 53 page report. (Again, that’s a download link, FYI).
This is probably for someone far more scholarly than this blogger to decide. However, I do have one final question: how are the same people (“birthers”) who went insane over the false rumor that Obama was born on American soil, before it was officially American soil, then support a guy who without doubt was born in another country? Let’s just have some consistency here, everybody…haha!
If there is anyone in the “birther” movement reading this post right now, please email me the answer!!! I’ll even send you my birth certificate
